Nexus One For Dummies
Google Android | Free Google Nexus One
The Google Nexus One is one of the most talked about phones of the year, and is now available for free from most operators.
The Nexus One is a classy looking device, being similar in size to the iPhone 4. Its smooth rounded metal-like body looks great is comfy to handle. The traditional four Android flat touch-sensitive buttons are present across the bottom along with an illuminated trackball.
Your free Google Nexus One is the first cell phone to offer version 2.1 of the Android operating system, bringing with it a thoughtful vehicle mode which displays large, easy to press icons shown in landscape that tie in nicely with turn-by-turn directions straight from Google Maps. An improved address book and integrated support for Microsoft Exchange email is also introduced.
The Android operating system allows for multi-tasking, meaning you can run multiple apps, a long-time problem with the Apple iPhone.
New widgets, apps and games can be downloaded from the Android Market. Whilst the selection on offer isn’t quite as comprehensive as that from the iPhone’s App Store, most are free and all of the useful apps are there.
The arsenal of communications and connectivity hardware on the Nexus One (and Nexus One version 2) includes GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and an integrated compass.
The 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM make the Nexus One feel really responsive, never stuttering of struggling.
Noise-cancellation technology helps to filter out background noise for a more comfortable conversation.
This smart-phone has a stunning 3.7-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution AMOLED touchscreen which transforms web surfing and video viewing into a delight. Automatic brightness keeps the display in tune with ambient light cutting down on contrast problems. Inputs into the screen, including the on-screen keyboard, are always captured accurately making it a joy to use. Note that despite the superb screen there is no multi-touch capability on the Nexus One.
The 5.0 mega-pixel camera with LED flash is comparable to other offerings from HTC, Nokia and Apple. It also records video at a 720 x 480 pixel resolution at 20 FPS. A built in microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB cards allows for plenty of storage.
The free Google Nexus One really shows the Android OS at its best, and combined with the powerful processor and excellent screen this smartphone is a treat to use. We are so impressed, we’d go as far as to say that the Nexus has the Motorola Milestone beaten into second place in the race for the best Android smartphone.
