What is Microsoft Tag?

Microsoft Tag is a free fun and mysterious way to find information on everyday items by taking snapshots of special “tags” with your camera phone. The mysterious thing about Tag is that you know you’re going to receive information on a tagged item but you don’t know in what form it will come. It could be a link to a URL, a video, a text, a picture or it could dial a phone number!

How does it work?

Microsoft Tag works by downloading the Tag software to your phone which transforms your phone’s camera into a scanner. Aim the camera at a tag and snap a picture. I have found that on the iPhone all you need to do is aim and it scans automatically. Once the scan is complete you will receive information by one of the many virtual medias (link, video, photo, etc.). You must be connected to the Internet for Tag to work.

What Phones Can Use Microsoft Tag?

Most of the popular phones with both camera and Internet capability such as the iPhone, Blackberry and Android can use Microsoft Tag. Most smart phones and Windows based phones can also use Tag.

How to Create Your Own Tags

Creating a Tag is simple. Just go to http://tag.microsoft.com/ and create a free Tag account. Once signed in you can click on the “create tag” button and fill in the text fields. It took me around 1 minute to create my first tag.

Ideas You Can Do With Microsoft Tag

So you know what Tag is but what could you possibly do with it? You could print a tag on your business card and have the tag lead back to your profile page or possibly a portfolio. You could leave mysterious clues and messages for your friends or you could run special promotions. The possibilities of what you can do with Tag are as restricted or as boundless as your creativity.
